What pledge can you make to reduce plastic consumption? #EarthDay

Earth Day is today, the focus this year is to ‘End Plastic Pollution’. Why does it matter?? Personally, it matters for my children and their children and so on. In time when they ask what did I do to reduce my footprint I can say I tried. Normally I bury my head in the sand a little, global warming is just too overwhelming. But if I break it down into small steps I can achieve something. I firmly believe the small steps add up.

With the move of home the children can now walk to school, this alongside living within walking distance of a food store has reduced our short car journeys significantly. Regular readers will know I reuse where I can, sharing many tutorials for making and creating using resources to hand. I love finding a thrifty pair of curtains in the charity shop, a fabulous amount of fabric to play with.

This year the focus on plastic seems agghhhh. This is so hard to avoid. As a family we have been discussing ways in which we can change to reduce our plastic use.

Here are some easy steps to take to reduce your plastic consumption:-

Menu plan, shop for loose vegetables. If you are fortunate to live near a store where you can take your own containers do. Make your own sacks and avoid plastic wrapping. Today we enjoyed chocolate chip fairy cakes. Looking for vegetable bags for loose veg? check out my guest post tutorial over on less stuff for easy drawstring bags made from t towels.

Plant some mixed salad leaves in pots.

Make yourself wax sandwich wraps – perfect as not only do they store your lunch they fold out into a perfect plate for your picnic. There is a tutorial here.

Take your own containers to the butchers – I have to admit I have my been brave enough to do this.

Collect plastic for recycling – did you know that your plastic bread bag can be recycled in the plastic bag recycling at the supermarket?

Shampoo bars – I keep meaning to visit Lush and treat myself. A colleague uses one and says it lasts six months.

Homemade cleaning products in glass bottles. I have recently treated myself to this rather gorgeous book Fresh Clean Home full of a variety of recipes… just need to make them now.

Say no to a straw. Here in the Uk, this is finally shifting with major retailers phasing them out.

Take your own coffee cup with you.

Buy a stainless steel water bottle and take it with you.

Buy bamboo products, such as toothbrush, washing up brush and toilet brush

This year I pledge to make my own cleaning products an use them. What will you pledge to reduce your plastic consumption?

Can't agree with you anymore! Plastic products are convenient sometimes, but it actually is not that safe and sanitary for the human body. What's important, it is not environmental friendly. Try not using too much plastic from now on!

Reduce your plastic consumption is a significant topic and issue in the modern world. I hope all of us will try our best to do that every day instead of Earth Day only.
