Stunning Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments

Looking for a simple, pretty homemade Christmas ornament?  Christmas ornaments made with embroidery hoops are super easy and fun.

What’s not to love about starting to make Christmas decorations?! Especially when using materials to hand from around the home. Now is the time to start making some new upcycled decorations for this season.

I love working with denim and have quite a few denim Christmas decorations ready to hang up, just need to make a decision on advent calendars!!

Today I am making the most of scraps of denim and some gilt cream I found in a draw! Combined with mini embroidery hoops. The base fabric is an old napkin with a little texture – jaquard.

To complement the gold leaf cream I have chosen to topstitch the diamonds in place with a mustard denim thread. As you can see I have played with different shaped diamonds and the number of diamonds.

Denim Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments

Denim Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments

Christmas ornaments made with embroidery hoops are super easy and fun. Find some scraps of fabric and lets get started. Before we start making this gorgeous denim Christmas decoration lets prep - have you downloaded your template?

Thread your sewing machine with your denim top stitch thread, with a denim sewing machine needle.

Materials

Tools

  • Iron
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Denim Sewing Machine Needle

Instructions

  1. Start by cutting out small pieces of denim, then ironing your bondaweb to the back of the denim pieces. I love working with bondaweb but you could just as easily use a glue stick.
  2. Using your template as a guide cut out diamonds in a variety of denim shades - you can see from my examples I have played with a variety of blues, plus with some burgundy denim scraps, I had in my stash.
  3. Layout your diamonds in a star shape, glue side facing your base white fabric. Once you are happy with your composition iron to adhere. I use the paper that comes with fusible glue to protect the iron.
  4. Using your finger rub a small amount of gilt cream onto your denim shapes taking care not to accidentally touch your base white fabric.[ Researching this post I learnt just how expensive this gilt cream is in America, an alternative to try is a spot of glue and gold leaf.
  5. Next topstitch around each shape, I have chosen a small stitch length as the shapes are small. Tidy up your ends on the back.
  6. Place your fabric into the embroidery hoop stretching tightly.
  7. On the back of your embroidery hoop trim the fabric to approximately an inch excess all around. Stitch a running thread all round and pull tight to gather this excess fabric.
  8. Cut a circle of felt to go on the back, if you have a second embroidery hoop you can use the inside wooden hoop as a rough guide.
  9. Slip stitch the felt into place, alternatively, you can glue with a glue gun.

Notes

Once you have made your decorations do check your sewing machine foot and clean off any excess gilt cream. I recommend an alcoholic wipe.
