This week I have been working on a commission. You may remember a couple of weeks ago I posted a round up of laptop case tutorials from around the internet. The bag was being purchased as a gift, the purchaser requested a zipped case which could be used to protect the laptop inside another bag, the receiver of the gift requested a shoulder strap. In order to combine both requests I made a slim detachable shoulder strap so the bag can be used on it’s own or as a case inside a bag.
I decided to use the pattern at designsponge for the basic case. The case is made of cotton fabric so I decided to strengthen the lining with heavy weight interfacing and an iron on wadding Vileseline H630.
This is the first time I have used Vileseline, which I found easy to use. The combined weight is perfect for the laptop case adding strength and protection. Next time I am going to try out the suggestion of quilters wadding and fabric adhesive spray – I’m always keen to keep costs down for purchasers!
I combined the pattern with one over at clearly tangled for the ruffle. Adding the ruffle did add an extra dimension when working out the right sized out fabric piece but I got there:)
I had a dilemma about the middle fabric, so asked Facebook fans for their opinion – at the time of stitching it was equal votes for each colour choice, and then the inevitable happened – I chose the coordinating fabric, and Facebook fans chose the alternative grey!! But I enjoyed seeking a second opinion:)

If you are interested in commissioning a bag drop me a message:) I’m off to Handmade Harbour to see what other people have been up to this week. Have a good week,
Vicky
Good job! Looks really nice
A lovely bag. I love that you have managed to keep the original idea as well as incorporating the special request!
I like this! Especially the ruffles 🙂
I love the fabric you have used.
This is gorgeous, and clearly very well made 🙂 Good job!
Thank you:) I have to admit to taking my laptop to work & back with it to check it was strong enough!
Oh I have seen that lovely fabric. I was researching fabrics to make some curtains for my bedroom, and it is on my shortlist. Lovely case.
Thanks, it was from the remnant bin at John Lewis:) Vicky
I think I would have gone with your choice of fabric for the middle – the grey’s great but might just have been a bit dominant as it was quite a thick band 🙂
Your bag is lovely. The ruffles are so unusual on a laptop bag xx
Worked out really well and I’m glad you went for the self fabric on the centre panel – looks good and I like this fabric :o)
It looks great! I love the yellow – such a happy colour 😀
