Curtain Fabric for Bags

UToday I am sharing with your  variety of bags you can make from curtain fabric.

There are many benefits of using curtain fabric for creating your own stylish bag. The weight and strength of the fabric – it tends to be heavier and therefore require less interfacing to hold its shape. Plus it is often easy to pick up a remnant too small for curtains but perfect for bags. Consider whether the weight of the fabric will fit through your sewing machine when you have several layers. To encourage your sewing machine I suggest using a 16 denim needle for sewing, lengthen your stitch and stitch slowly.

What I made with just 1 metre square of curtain fabric:

The weight of the fabric is perfect for a bag which is roomy, taking a considerable weight of contents!

The next bag is the other end of the scale size wise. This cute small clutch bag is just the right size for your mobile, purse and keys. The bag is perfect for BBQ season (is that wishful thinking on my part?!)

Feeling inspired yet? Running to the shops for a metre of curtain fabric?? How about a clutch bag with co-ordinating wallet?

And what’s a bag without a co-ordinating wallet?

I had a few small pieces left so, never one to waste fabric, I made a  flower corsage.

To create your own flower corsage you need three metres of scrap fabric, tutorial here.

Overall I am delighted with what can be achieved with one metre of fabric, with a few toning pieces thrown in for lining.

If you don’t wish to design your own bag there are lots of free tutorials available. Check out my pinterest board for more ideas:)

Thanks to Hillarys Blinds for the fabric sample Calluna, to charity shops for bags for the accessories, and to Marie for the donation of purple fabric. I am entering this blog post into their Hillarys Blinds Country Craft Competition.

I hope you have had a creative week, as usual I am popping by Handmade Harbour  to see what other people have been creating:)

Your bags are all fab. I especially like the metal link on the first one, small details like that give bags that 'bought-it' look. And the wallet is simply amazing. Hard to believe it's handmade. Good luck with the competition!!!

Great bag designs, love the mix of cotton and leather together. And the corsage with the left-overs is a pretty use of the scraps. By the way thanks for the introduction to the upcycling magazine you were a guest in, I purchased a copy and really enjoyed it x
