This post is challenge 6 of the #12DaysofChristmasDIYChallenges

The challenge – make some gift wrapping from your fabric scraps.

It’s incredible just how much gift wrap is thrown away each Christmas, much of it into landfill. Today I am going to show you how to make a simple drawstring bag using fabric scraps.

Scrappy fabric drawstring bag

Gather your fabric scraps.

Gradually piece them together – try sewing two or three in a row then adding a piece diagonally.

Build up two pieces of fabric, one for each side of your bag. Sew one side together. Place bias binding approximately 2cm down from the top edge. Stitch in place

Place the right sides of your fabric together. Stitch along the bottom and the other side seam.

Create your lining, forming a slip bag the same size as your external bag.

Box in the corners (see this post for instruction re boxing corners).

Turn the outside of the bag wrong side out, place the lining inside the outer bag with the right sides facing each other.

Stitch around the top of the bag leaving a turning gap. Turn right sides out. Press, pressing in the turning gap.

Top stitch around the top of the bag. This will finish the turning gap for you.

Thread piping through the bias binding and tie.

The only question is what gift are you going to put in the gift bag?? I have made my niece a fabric scrap memory game – see how here.

Are you busy sewing up gifts? Once I have finished making a gift I just want to give it away straight away!!
