Look no further for a relaxing all age Christmas star craft activity. These craft stars are perfect for hanging on your Christmas tree or strung like a garland across your mantlepiece.
My son and I had an absorbing hour or two making these stylish air clay stars. There is something so relaxing about working with air clay. Adding texture to the stars is fun, use what you have to hand, we chose to create dots into the clay using the wrong end of a paintbrush. Dare I admit we made these stars at Easter?! We just fancied working with clay that afternoon.
Star ornaments are simple to make, whatever the age, a great craft for kids or adults – slightly more rough and ready with toddlers, a more refined look if you have more refined motor skills!! And a great activity for practicing fine motor skills for growing children.
DIY Christmas Star Craft
These Christmas stars are easy to make with materials you have to hand – air clay, rolling pin a star cutter, paintbrush, white and silver acrylic paint. If you prefer you can use salt dough.
Step One
Roll our your air clay until it is 2-3mm thick. You are aiming for a nice even surface.
Step Two
Using cooking cutters cut out your star, ours is 3″ wide. Using a damp finger (place your finger in water first) smooth the edges of your shape.
Step three
Add texture to your cookies. We used the wrong end of a paintbrush to add dots across the surface, pressing into the air clay stars softly.
Step Four
Add a hanging hole by pressing right through with your paintbrush at the top of one of your stars. Make sure you have enough clay around this hanging point that the clay doesn’t break. Set aside to fully dry, I have left mine on parchment paper.
Step Five
Now the creative expression starts – I have chosen to paint my stars with white acrylic as a starting point. Paint the right side, sides, and back of your star with acrylic paint and allow to fully dry.
Step six
Adding silver or gold to your recessed dots. I have tried a variety of methods, including placing dots of glue into our recessed holes and adding silver leaf, using Giotto pens, using acrylic paints. Have fun experimenting yourself with the materials you have to hand, testing with one star. My personal preference is Giotto pens but sadly couldn’t source any locally in silver or gold. Instead, I have worked with silver acrylic.
Step Seven
Lastly place thread through your hanging hole and decorate your home.

Making these at Easter was very impressive forward planning! I had some of this DAS clay a few years ago, it's such fun stuff isn't it? Very easy to work with. Your stars are lovely, simple but beautiful. I didn't know I needed a clay star garland and I'm not sure where I would put it but I do feel like I need one now!

Your clay stars look great, Vicky. I haven't tried using clay, but your tutorial makes me want to give it a try.

I love air clay so much but no matter what I do, it looks like a child made it. I love these stars. They look forgiving!

Stars are the perfect item to make year round. They fit in perfectly with any season - i.e. the fact that you and your son made them during Easter. They were awesome then and awesome now, too! They turned out really pretty and a fun way to decorate for the holidays!
