10 Plus ideas for using up bread crusts – the bane of my kitchen waste #zerowasteweek

The average family could save £700 a year, simply by throwing away less food.

We throw away 7 million tonnes of food and drink every year from home, costing us £12.5bn a year.” Love food hate waste

In our home I feel as though I loose half a loaf in uneaten bread crusts (I may have mentioned before that my children are fussy eaters). I inwardly groan when I open their lunch boxes and see the wasted bread crusts. Back at school this week we have agreed different breads so fingers crossed I will have no crusts! But I appreciate bread crusts are a common issue. So what to do with them?? Personally I cut them off and freeze them (cereal box liners are perfect for freezing them in).

We used to always throw the ends of the bread in a brown paper bag to let them dry out and then made what we called dressing with them. Just add in some egg, sage, salt, pepper, chicken broth, canned oysters if you like them, and bake. I don't know why you couldn't throw in the bread crusts as well.

Such brilliant ideas, Vicky - thank you. I love how you've taken us outside the box of the usual croutons and breadcrumbs. Some of these are completely new to me and I can't wait to check them out!

Bread disappears from the table as long as it is soft and fresh, after that it isn't that popular anymore and someone starts new bread etc. Result? Few bags on the table with few bread slices inside that no one will eat. I usually make warm sandwiches out of those (like small pizzas just using butter instead of tomato sauce; butter, any topping you wish and cheese), works for rye bread too. If there is enough toast breads (light, wheat flour bread) left I mix milk, eggs and some salt, dip the bread in and cook it on pan. Add jam, sugar, whipped cream on top and you have great snack!

Also, bread crumbs are always needed and I try to do those rather than buy from the shop. They won't cost that much of course but any saved money is saved money.

I'm lucky that I don't have must waste but if I have bread over I generally do the bread or bread and butter pudding with lots of fruit and cinnamon. Funny enough I've never thought of doing breadcrumbs and freezing them, I'll have to do that. I like breadcrumbs as a topper for fish :)

Bread and butter pudding is my husbands favourite. Freezes well in portions too as a cake like item:)
