I am excited to be a zero waste week ambassador for 2015 – for those of you who know me may well wonder, as you will know the reality of my bin!! The aim of the week is to encourage people to think about their waste, to reduce, reuse, recycle. We are all on a journey in life, and every step is very valid:)

As I contemplate my pledge for this years campaign I have been reflecting on the changes I/we have made to reduce waste from zero waste week 2014. Our house is now nappy free, yeah!! Hurray:) I have managed small changes, we now compost all vegetable waste all year round. The biggest change has been the county council introducing street collection of plastic yoghurt pots and food packaging. Despite these changes I am still regularly shocked by the volume of waste we produce as a household.

In the next couple of months I would like to regularly make my own:

Bathroom soap,

Granola,

Fairy cakes

Lunch for work (somewhat of a confession that I am somewhat spasmodic about taking my own lunch in)

plus reduce my pepsi max consumption by drinking water. Any recommendation for a good granola recipe (without too much maple syrup due to cost) gratefully received.

My pledge for the week is “I will be menu planning, food shopping with as little packaging as possible, and encouraging the children to eat their crusts! I will also be focussing on handmade gifts using materials I already have”

    Down to Earth Granola – Better Homes and Gardens April 2002
    4 c. old fashioned oatmeal
    1-1/2 c. sliced almonds (or nuts of choice)
    1/2 c. light brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 c. vegetable oil (canola)
    1/4 c. honey
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1-1/2 c. raisins (or dried fruit of choice)
    Mix first five ingredients in a large bowl. Warm oil and honey in small saucepan, whisk in vanilla.
    Carefully pour over oat mixture. Stir gently with wooden spoon – can finish mixing with your hands.
    Spread on 12″x18″ shallow baking sheet/pan.
    Bake at 300 degrees for 40 min. stirring every 10 minutes. Remove from oven and cool pan on a wire rack. Stir in raisins and store in an airtight container. Store at room temp for one week or freeze for up to three months. Makes 9 cups. Serving is 1/3 c.
    I also add 1/2 c. wheat germ to the dry ingredients. Great with yogurt.
    Sorry don’t know the conversion to metric.

      Thanks for sharing your recipe, delighted it does not include maple syrup (which really bulks up the cost of making your own!). Will give this a try:)

    I love your way of thinking! As a representative of an waste removal company (http://rubbishclearancechiswicklondonw4.co.uk/waste-removal.html), I am standing 100% behind the idea of recycling and reusing the waste we all produce! I am happy to notice that the people are more and more aware of the impact that our rubbish has on the planet and they save energy, recycle and even consider trying the Zero Waste lifestyle, which is, by the way, not so impossible as many people think! Thank you for the tips and ideas!

    Being the zero waste ambassador for 2015 is a really great thing and I hope that you are having really great time teaching people how to reduce their waste. Zero waste lifestyle is very hard for me and I can’t say that I am so devoted to it but I can say that I have reduced my waste by 50% since last year. I am very proud of myself and I know that I can accomplish even more! 🙂
