National Recycling Week is taking place the 22nd to the 25th June. I am a real advocate of recycling, and upcycling. The amount of waste generated and then sent to landfill saddens me. So when I was selected by Gumtree to take part in an event they are hosting which raises awareness of National Recycling Week I was delighted, to say the least!
Gumtree Upcycle Blogger Challenge
The idea is simple, breathe new life into a previously loved item. I have been provided a £100 to purchase and upcycle any item from gumtree. The upcycled creations are showcased at a cocktail and canape evening in London. Max McMurdo will then judge the entries for the chance to win £500 for the winners chosen charity.
The final aspect of the blogging challenge is to resell the newly transformed item, with the encouragement to pass on the sale value to your favourite charity. Choosing a charity has been a quick and easy decision, I have chosen Nelsons Journey, a local charity for bereaved children.
What has not been an easy decision is choosing an item to purchase!! Locally there are so many items listed on an hourly basis, that searching via this method for inspirtion was somewhat dauting and overwhelming. I considered beer crates with the idea of transforming into a foot stool, a chest of drawers to convert into a shelving unit, and chairs.
Due to a relatively quick timeframework for the challenge, I needed to choose from items available rather than biding my time for the perfect item to be listed. In the end I contacted a number of sellers, narrowly missing out on items which had just been sold. But I am very delighted with my purchase of three chairs. The low cost of them allows me ample budget for additional items required to transform them into a new creation. I am excited!! and grateful to my husband who will assist me with carpentry.
I will of course update you on what I transform them into but in the meantime get guessing!!
Whats not to love – upcycling? charity fundraising? cocktails in London???!
