Learning to crochet

This year I am feeling determined to learn to crochet. For far too long I have owned the book Crochet Workshop by Erika Knight  but was put off  with the first project, crocheting a dishcloth. Admittedly regular readers may well think that a DIY dishcloth that will last for years would appeal, but it just didn’t float my boat!!

This time I decided to try the blanket – initially starting with wrong size yarn and hook I did myself no favours. So when I saw this gorgeous yarn Delphi by Debbie Bliss reduced to £1 a ball I snapped it up!

The correct yarn and hook for the instructions did make a difference!!  You tube videos greatly assisted the instructions in the book.

Several attempts plus some kind folk on facebook and I was away. The speed of crochet appeals – the project grew quickly and satisfyingly.

The variance in the tones of colour in the yarn hide the odd mistake I made – to be honest I don’t think anyone’s going to notice:)

Sadly I never thought to check the length of the yarn per ball so my finished project is somewhat smaller than anticipated.

Next up I am hoping to crochet some snowflakes, but I am realising that learning to read crochet patterns is a skill in itself. I can quickly look up you tube videos for stitches but knowing quite where to put the stitch is an entirely different thing!! If anyone has any suggestion re learning to read and understand crochet patterns I would love to know:)

Pretty blanket! I also want to learn to crochet, I've seen so many crochet projects (dresses, bathing suits, and even trims). Thanks for sharing!

I'm so excited you learned to crochet! I started knitting a couple of months ago so I know all about the frustration and the mistakes, and the complete saviour that is YouTube! For learning how to read crochet patterns, you should have a look at the "Lake's Edge Hat" by Kat Goldin. It's a free pattern that has some clear instructions on what all the shorthand and abbreviations mean. Good luck with it! Eline (previously of Pasta & Patchwork)

I'm not a crocheter but often admired other peoples work, you've made me think that I should give it a try. :)
