Sewing teen gifts

What do you make for a teen’s birthday gift? Especially one you have never met?! I have recently taken to asking parents for suggestions of suitable gifts.. I was delighted when I received the suggestion of hairslides.

I have to confess I spend too long on Pinterest, whilst browsing I spotted a tutorial for super cute little zip bags. Perfect for hair accessories.

small trasparent storage bags

So the presentation and storage of gifts was sorted! Next up to create a variety of hair accessories. These are fabulous for using up fabric scraps.

I created the zip bags out of fabric as opposed to the suggested vinyl. the bag is not lined so before sewing up I finished each seam with a zigzag stitch. I love the little windows, great for seeing what each bag contains. It took slightly longer than I anticipated but I’m sure I would be much quicker with practice:) My kids have inevitably put their requests in for some. They would be perfect for my sons collection of crazy bones!

I made three bags each containing a different hair accessory.

Teen girl hair accessories

1) Scrunchies – tubes of fabric approximately 24″ long and 1.5″” wide threaded with 7″ of elastic. Super quick and easy.

2) Felt flowers – I used this tutorial. Again quick and easy to whip up.

3) Shimmery flower. I had some sparkly transparent fabric to hand. I cut three strips varying between 1 – 2″ width. To prevent fraying I singed the edge of the fabric on a naked flame. I’ve not done this for years, I have to admit I quite enjoyed it!
Gather up fabric with running stitch
I then gathered the strips up tightly with running stitch and added a button. I painted a hairslide red with nail varnish so it coordinated.

I’m hoping the gift is well received – it does feel far more of a gamble than a bought gift..

If you fancy making your own I created a pinterest board with a few cute hair accessories, find it here.

Do you make gifts for children’s friends? I would love to hear some suggestions of gifts to make.

What a lovely idea for a gift! It's always better to receive something that a person has spent time creating, I'm sure they will love the

I used to make presents for the children's friends when they were younger, but am banned from making them for teen friends. Even more tempting after seeing your cute bags and hair accessories. I'm making hair scrunchies at the moment, by recovering hair bands. Maybe I could sneak a few into the present bags!

Love this idea Vicky. Hair accessories I think would always go down well with girls. I tend to make pencil cases and bags for my daughters' friends. You can never have too many of either of those!!

Hi Vicky, They are super cute. Any one can use the purses. The slider clips are great with rose flowers on top. I am inspired to make my own scrunchies with the scraps of fabric I have lying around. thanks a lot. Keep up the good work.
