Sewing Machine Stitching Guide

I don’t know about you but I tend to stick to what I am familiar with. I have confess to owning my sewing machine for nearly a year now and only using two stitches, straight and zigzag!!!

A while back I saw this idea of creating a stitch guide for your machine, and I have been meaning to make one for myself ever since!

Stitch guide

The idea  is create a guide numbering the width and depth of each stitch on your sampler. This creates a handy guide to refer back to whenever you are sewing a project.

Unfortunately I became distracted by the stitches, and realised that I had not set about the project in a sufficiently organised way to record this level of detail – I had only thought about stitches where you vary the length, and not those where it is possible to vary width and length creating many more variances!!

I am delighted to have discovered stitches which I will use, now I know how they stitch:)

Having had a hectic week I am looking forward to a slightly more relaxed week:) The eagle eyed will have noticed that I didn’t quite make my self imposed blogging every day for seven days – it just didn’t happen the day I worked 8 hours and then went out in the evening!!

Trusting you have had a creative week I am off to see what other people have been up to over at Handmade Harbour.

This is a good idea. When I got my sewing machine, I went through all the stitches and made a list of the ideal settings for each of them, but I didn't actually make anything like your guide which would have been a better idea.

Such a good idea, I can see lots of us will be finding some fabric to make a machine sampler with! I love the stitch that is 3rd in from the left, its a great decorative stitch.

Brilliant idea! And looking through the comments it would seem that most of us are the same - I too only use straight and zigzag... am a total wuss when it comes to trying new things on the machine - mainly because I always want to try them on the custom order that I'm working on, rather than take the time to have a play! This is such a clever idea isn't it? I've started to do this for embroidery stitches, but I hadn't thought of doing the same for machine stitches.
